A Camberwell renovation often looks like this: a restored Federation front, with a modern extension behind. The lighting should reflect that split. In the extension, recessed LEDs work well, planned around the kitchen bench, the dining table and the sitting area. In the original rooms, we prefer to keep ceiling roses and add dimmers, wall lights or lamps so the character survives. We check the roof space before cutting, because old cable runs and thin insulation can complicate a downlight installation. Heritage overlays cover much of the suburb, so we keep any visible outside lights modest and in keeping with the facade, like a small wall lantern by the front door. Garden lighting for the back lawn or terrace can be more generous, as it sits out of sight of the street. We match colour temperatures from room to room.
