LED downlights in Canterbury need a plan for pressed metal ceilings, tall walls and ornate cornices, not a standard grid of holes. We choose lighting that suits the period and still lights the room properly.

Pressed metal ceilings are a feature worth protecting, and cutting downlight holes through them is rarely the answer. In those rooms we lean on pendant lights, wall lights and picture lights, with dimmers so the room can shift from reading light to evening glow. Where the ceiling is plain plaster, such as in an extension or a newer kitchen, downlight installation makes sense and we set out the spacing so you do not end up with a runway of spotlights. High ceilings mean longer drops for pendants, and working from a tall ladder takes care and patience. We check what is above the ceiling before we cut anything, because older roof cavities can hold tangled cable and lagging. Garden lighting for paths and trees suits the bigger blocks near Canterbury Gardens, and we keep the fittings low-key to match the streetscape. Not if they are placed with care. We keep downlights well clear of roses and cornices, and often suggest a pendant or wall lights where a ceiling is too decorative to cut. Dimmers and warm LED colour temperatures also help the room keep its period feel. We will mark the layout with you before cutting anything.
