Richmond's backstreets are full of Victorian workers' cottages and terraces, many single-fronted on narrow lots, often renovated with a modern rear extension. There are also converted factories and warehouses, public housing towers, and a large number of newer apartment buildings along the main roads. Many streets sit under heritage overlays, so we keep visible external work discreet. In the cottages, switchboards are often old, space is tight and earlier renovations have sometimes been tacked onto original circuits. Warehouse conversions bring high ceilings, exposed services and unusual layouts. In apartments, the work is mostly lighting, outlets and appliances, with body-corporate rules to follow. Each type needs a different approach, and we're used to switching between them on the same street.
