Federation and Edwardian ceilings are lovely, with ornate cornices and ceiling roses. A grid of downlights can ruin them. So we think about where light is needed and where it is better to leave the ceiling alone. Picture lights, wall lights and pendants do plenty of work in a period living room, with downlights saved for kitchens and hallways where they make sense. In the interwar homes and newer extensions, plasterboard ceilings suit downlights well. We check the ceiling space before cutting and keep the fittings away from insulation. A full-house lighting plan might mix dimmable downlights in the extension with pendants over the dining table. Walkways and gardens can have low-level lighting that makes the front path safe at night. Our job is to find the combination that suits the home and set it up so it is simple to use.
