LED downlights in an Elwood Art Deco flat can be a puzzle, with low ceilings and a single light per room. We design lighting installation that adds layers without crowding the room.

A single central light is the original plan in many Elwood flats, and it leaves corners dark. Add LED downlights across a low ceiling and you risk a pockmarked look, so we think about spacing, trim size and beam angle before cutting anything. Often the best answer is fewer downlights, a dimmer and a couple of wall lights or a pendant over the table. Bungalows and Edwardians have more height, so downlight installation there can be bolder, with pendants in the kitchen and feature lights in a new living space. Out the back, garden lighting helps a small courtyard feel like a room, and near Elwood Canal we choose fittings that cope with damp. Heritage overlays make us careful with anything visible from the street. Light should flatter a room, not flatten it.

Often yes, but we are careful. We check the ceiling space for clearance and insulation, use slim fittings, and space them so the ceiling does not look riddled with holes. Sometimes wall lights or a pendant suit the room better, and we will say so.
