Doncaster's bigger blocks give plenty to light. The sloping garden can have steps, retaining walls and paths that are hard to see on a winter evening, and well-placed garden lighting makes them safer. Inside, the 1960s and 1970s homes often have dated ceiling fittings and a few dim corners. Downlights in the kitchen and hall, pendants over the dining table and dimmers in the lounge change the feel of the house. Double garages benefit from bright LED battens, with switches by the internal door and the roller door. In apartments around Doncaster Hill, downlights suit low, flat ceilings, though any work that touches the building structure or common areas needs the owners corporation's say-so first. We check the roof space, the insulation and the existing cable before cutting holes, then fit lights rated for the job.
