A common Hughesdale story goes like this. The back of the house has been extended with a modern kitchen and a sloping or flat ceiling, but the old front rooms still have one light in the middle. When renovators open the ceiling, it is the right time to fit lighting that suits the way the room is used. We plan LED downlights for kitchen and living areas, add dimmers for evenings, and put pendants over the table or bench. For the existing interwar rooms, we often avoid downlights and use wall lights or restored fittings, which sit better with high or decorative ceilings. Before the plasterer closes anything, it is worth getting cable run to every position you might want later. That saves cutting into the new ceiling a year down the track.
