A Brighton home with decorative ceilings, deep cornices or timber beams is not a place for a grid of downlights. We start with what the room needs: pendants or wall lights for ambience, a few carefully placed downlights for tasks, and dimmers to let you move from dinner to quiet night. In the larger contemporary rebuilds, lighting is usually about scale: long hallways, double-height spaces and kitchens with big islands.
