A typical sixties house here has one ceiling rose in the middle of each room and not much else. At night that gives you flat, shadowy light. Good lighting installation is mostly about layers: downlights for general light, a pendant over the kitchen bench, and a dimmer so the lounge can wind down in the evening. We check the roof space first for insulation, ducting and old cable, because that decides where fittings can safely go. Where insulation is present, we choose downlights that are rated to sit beside it. After a block has been split, the new townhouse often has plain builder fittings, and owners ask us to swap them for a warmer colour and better spacing. We also fit garden lighting along paths and driveways when you want the yard to feel safer after dark.
