A cottage hallway on Emerald Hill can be a dim tunnel with one bare fitting. A converted warehouse near the market has the opposite issue: ceilings so high that a standard downlight leaves the floor in shadow. So we choose fittings to suit the space. In cottages, shallow downlights and a dimmer lift narrow rooms without cutting into old ceilings more than needed. In warehouse conversions, pendant lights hung at a useful height often work better than a grid of downlights. Before any hole is cut we check what is above the ceiling, because roof spaces in older buildings hold surprises, from old cable to insulation that needs clearance around fittings.
