Prahran is mostly Victorian and Edwardian housing, with rows of single and double-fronted terraces and workers' cottages packed into narrow lots. Mixed in are post-war flats, a few large public housing towers and newer apartment blocks along Chapel Street and High Street. In the older houses we regularly find switchboards with rewireable fuses, no safety switches and wiring that has been added to by several owners over the decades. Many of these homes have been renovated at the back with open-plan kitchens, which puts real demand on a supply that was never designed for it. Because the houses sit shoulder to shoulder, access to the roof space and underfloor can be awkward, so we take the time to plan cable routes before we start.
