Brick party walls between terraces are great for sound and awful for Wi-Fi. A router at the front of the house may barely reach the open-plan living area at the back. We fix that with wired data points: one at the router, one behind the TV and one in each study or bedroom that needs it. Running data cabling in a cottage takes planning, as the roof space is tight and the walls may be solid. We route cables through the cavities that exist and avoid taking more plaster off than necessary. For wall-mounted TVs, we match fixings to the wall, whether it is brick, hollow plaster or stud, and tuck the power and HDMI leads behind the screen. Older homes may have only one TV point, so we can add antenna outlets where the screen now lives.
