Cutting into a terrace is a delicate thing, because the houses are tight and the plaster is often original. That is why we plan rewire routes before we begin. Many Prahran cottages have been altered by several owners, and each one left behind a layer of wiring. Rubber or cloth insulation can crumble, and junction boxes get hidden above the ceiling where nobody remembers them. We inspect and test, then work out which cables can be reused and which cannot. Access is the challenge in houses that sit shoulder to shoulder: the roof space may be low, and the underfloor tight. We still manage to avoid taking cornices off, and patch any holes neatly. Many owners combine a rewire with a renovation, because walls are open anyway. Afterwards, the new circuits, safety switches and labelled board give you something you can trust.
