Post-war homes in Ashwood often came with a small board with a few fuses, designed for a household that owned one heater and a radiogram. Families who have settled in for a decade or two tend to add things: a split system, a bigger oven, a home office. Every addition takes capacity, and an old board has none to spare. This is why we usually suggest starting with the board, then adding everything else on top. We swap the old panel for a new one with circuit breakers and RCD safety switches, separate circuits for the big appliances and clear labels that the next owner will thank you for. Newer townhouses have better boards, but if you plan to add cooling or an EV charger, it is worth checking that the capacity is still there. We test every circuit before leaving.

If your board is old, yes. A split system needs its own circuit, and an old fuse board may not have room or protection. Upgrading first means the new cooling is connected to a safe board, and you avoid doing the job twice.
