We replace them with a board that has circuit breakers and safety switches, so each part of the house has its own protected circuit. In a weatherboard, the board is often on a side wall or in the garage, and we keep the new one in the same discreet spot where possible. We test the existing wiring we leave in place and flag any older cable in the roof. Doing this before or during the renovation is simpler than doing it after the walls are lined, and it leaves room for what you want to add later.
