Victorian and Edwardian houses have high ceilings that trap heat in summer, and the rear extensions often face the afternoon sun. A split system helps, but the board needs space for it. In houses that have had circuits squeezed on over the years, we check capacity before the installer is booked. The wiring job is a dedicated circuit, an isolator beside the outdoor unit and a neat connection at the head. The installer handles refrigerant and mounting. In interwar flats and post-war walk-ups, the outdoor unit position is often the sticking point, and the owners corporation may have a say. In tall rooms, a ceiling fan with a down-rod does a lot of work before you turn on the air conditioner. We fit fans to framing, never plaster alone, and wire them to a switch or control.
