Art Deco flats along the canal and Californian bungalows a few blocks from the beach make up much of Elwood. Lighting, kitchens and tired boards keep us busy here.
Elwood homes
Elwood has one of Melbourne's best-known collections of interwar flats, many with Art Deco detailing, mixed with Edwardian homes and Californian bungalows. Some later apartments sit closer to the main roads. A lot of the flats keep their original layout, which often means a single light per room and very few powerpoints. Bungalow owners tend to renovate kitchens and open up the back of the house. Some streets near the canal are low-lying, so we think carefully about where switchboards and outdoor circuits are placed. Many areas also sit under heritage overlays, so we keep visible external work discreet and in keeping with the street.
