LED downlights in St Kilda need some thought in flats with low ceilings and solid concrete or plaster. We plan a lighting installation that makes small rooms feel bigger without cutting where it should not.

Small rooms live or die by their lighting. A single central fitting in a 1930s bedsit makes a room look smaller, and a dark corner makes it feel worse. A few dimmable downlights, a wall light by the bed and a pendant over a small table do more than a bright overhead. The catch in St Kilda is the structure. Walk-ups and Art Deco blocks can have concrete slabs above, with no cavity to sit a downlight in, so we may choose surface-mounted or track lighting instead. Where there is a cavity, we check what is above, because neighbours' wiring and shared services sometimes run through it. Period houses divided into flats raise similar questions about shared ceilings. Whatever the layout, we agree it with you before cutting, and talk through warm and cool white.

Not recessed ones in solid concrete, unless there is a bulkhead or cavity. We can use surface-mounted LED fittings, track lighting or wall lights to get a similar result. We look at the ceiling first and suggest what suits it.
