Big glass doors look great at noon and turn into black mirrors at night if the lighting isn't planned. Open-plan kitchens behind Fitzroy North villas need layers: downlights for work surfaces, pendants over the dining table, dimmers to take the edge off, and maybe wall washers on a feature wall. Raked and skillion ceilings in extensions sometimes limit where recessed lights can go, so we map the structure first. In the original front rooms, we'd leave the plaster and cornices alone and use lamps, wall lights or a pendant instead of cutting into period ceilings. Outside, garden lighting along a path or beneath a deck turns the backyard into a place you use in the evening. We'll work out switching with you so the open plan can be lit in zones, not all at once.
