Behind the new cabinetry in a renovated Fitzroy North home, there's often a switchboard that predates the renovation by decades. A switchboard upgrade lets the wiring catch up with the house.

The pattern is familiar. A family buys a villa or Edwardian home, builds a rear extension with an open-plan kitchen, and installs new appliances. The original board stays, sometimes hidden behind a cabinet door or a coat rack. Then the circuits start to struggle: breakers tripping when the oven and dishwasher run together, or fuses that blow when someone uses the heater. We replace the board with a modern one that has individual breakers and safety switches, and plenty of spare capacity for the future. Owners moving off gas for induction, hot water and heating add a lot of load, so we size the board with that in mind. If the old board is in an inconvenient spot, we check whether it can be moved legally, because relocating it affects the wiring behind it. Everything gets labelled and tested.
