A Victorian or Edwardian mansion can hold several generations of wiring: the original, a mid-century update and whatever the last renovation added. Large houses have long runs, tall walls and decorative plasterwork, so a rewire needs to be planned room by room. We start with a test, then decide whether to replace everything, or one wing at a time. Ceiling roses, picture rails and timber panelling are all things we work around, not through. Often the neatest route is through the roof space and subfloor, with holes kept small and patched at the end. Because many Toorak streets sit under heritage controls, we keep any visible external work discreet, and we suggest you check with council if exterior changes are planned. A rewire is also the time to add circuits for air conditioning, a pool or a home office. We will tell you which wiring is fine to keep.
