Plenty of older houses here still have a fuse box that has outlived its original wiring, and some are not far off a century old. Porcelain fuses were fine for their time, but they do not offer the protection that safety switches provide. We swap the old unit for a modern board with circuit breakers and RCDs, and label each circuit. This is the first step we recommend for most older homes in the area, because it improves safety across the whole house at once. It also sets up the rest of your plan, whether that is a staged rewire, an induction cooktop or a split system. We inspect the wiring leaving the board and let you know about any parts that look tired. The new board is usually fitted in the same place as the old one, which keeps visible changes to a minimum.
