Behind the front door of many Glen Iris bungalows sits a board that has seen several renovations. A switchboard upgrade replaces old fuses with safety switches and enough circuits for a modern kitchen.

The interwar homes here often kept their original board for decades while the family grew and the kitchen was redone. Appliances have multiplied, but the number of circuits hasn't. We frequently find one circuit feeding half the house, with a dishwasher, oven and powerpoints fighting over it. A new board spreads the load properly. Each major appliance gets its own breaker, and RCD protection covers the circuits that need it. If you're adding a rear extension or going up a storey, a board upgrade is part of getting the electrical right. We also check the incoming supply, since some older properties have a modest main that struggles once an air conditioner or EV charger is added. We label the board clearly, so anyone who opens it later can follow it.

Usually it should, or at the same time. A second level adds lights, outlets and likely air conditioning. We'll check the existing board and supply and tell you what's needed before the builder starts. It's much easier than reopening finished walls later.
